Traverse Square
Teen Support Group: Las Hermanas developed and implemented
weekly discussion topics and activities, such as a Sexual Health and
Education workshop, for girls ages 11-16.
Latina Women’s Social: Las Hermanas hosted a Latina
women’s study break at La Casa de Albizu Campos in order to promote unity
and sisterhood amongst ALL Latinas, in a relaxed social
environment.
Women of Color Empowerment Workshop: Las Hermanas sponsored a
day-long workshop consisting of Women’s Self Esteem and Image Enhancement
activities, culminating in a Self-Defense Basic Technique
Workshop.
National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality: Las Hermanas
aided Wesleyan's Police Accountability Committee(PAC) in soliciting
support for various letter writing and tabling activities. The day long
protest was intended to educate the greater Wesleyan community on
incidents of police brutality, harassment, and specifically, the abuse of
students by police on college campuses.
FALL 1998
Habitat for Humanity: Las Hermanas, along with other Ethnic
Greek organizations, aided the Sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
in the rebuilding of houses in the New Haven area.
"When Columbus INVADED My House!": Las Hermanas sponsored an
Open-Mic Night on Columbus Day, in order to recall the exploitation,
enslavement and massacre of our Indigenous and African peoples.
Take Back The Night: Las Hermanas provided
snacks and refreshments at the Butterfield Station and handed out
statistics on Women of Color and Rape/Sexual Assault.
Bring Down The Hands of Violence March: Las Hermanas
co-sponsored the march along with the Police Accountability Committee
(PAC) and other student organizations. It successfully brought together
children, parents, students and teachers with the hopes of ending violence
in Middletown and in other communities.
Herencia Negra: Las Hermanas brought up a bomba y plena band,
along with Nosotras and the Black and Latino Brotherhood, in order to
commemorate La Cultura Latina and its African influences. The band held
an interactive workshop which included a discussion on the origins of la
bomba y la plena, the instruments, a small dance lesson and
performance.
"The Women of My House!": Las Hermanas held a reception for a
cultural display, created and donated by the Alumni Hermanas of Eta
Chapter. The display revealed the many faces of Latina women and the many
places they come from.
How to be a Better, Safer Lover: Las Hermanas, along with
other organizations, helped Wesleyan's Health Education Program bring to
Wesleyan an AIDS education panel. The panelist included educators who
reach out to diverse communities. The panel discussion followed the Safer
Sex Menu, which included a variety of hints and tidbits on how to
practice safer sex.
SPRING 1998
Cien Anos/100 Years: A Century of U.S. Imperialism in Puerto
Rico:Las Hermanas, with the support of Ajua Campos and La Unidad
Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., brought up former Yound
Lord Vicente "Panama" Alba to speak on Puerto Rico's colonial status and
mobilization efforts.
The Yellow Dress: Las Hermanas, along with the Women of
Color Collective and the Women's Resources Center, helped Wesleyan' Health
Education Program present a program which consisted of a performance
and panel discussion addressing dating violence.
College Exploration Weekend 1998:Las Hermanas hosted 10-15
inner-city high school girls for a College Exploration Weekend.
Several activities held for the girls included: a panel on Latinos in
Higher Education, a discussion about the college application process, a
tour of the campus, attendance to the Asian Cooperative Theater spring
show and the Forbidden City Party.
Idella B. Howell Child Care Center: Las Hermanas assisted
professional child care workers in developing programs for pre-school
children and attending to daily responsibilities.
SUMMER 1998
Benefit Party: Las Hermanas, in conjunction with La Unidad
Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. and with the support of
Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Inc., raised $1100 at New York's Audubon Bar
and Grill, for the Freedom Summer '98 movement.
FALL 1998
Breast Cancer Tabling: In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, Las Hermanas participated in distributing statistical facts and
other resourceful information on breast cancer.
Halloween Halls: Las Hermanas, in conjunction with the
Office of Community Services, helped organize and participated in
escorting young children from the Middletown community in a Halloween
trick or treat adventure around Wesleyan's campus.
Aurora Levins Morales: A Puerto Rican Jewish feminist
writer and historian was invited by Las Hermanas in conjunction with
Nosotras and The Havurah to host a lecture/discussion on her latest works.
AIDS in the People of Color Community: In conjunction with
La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. las hermanas
invited George Gates from the Young Men's Blood Survey in New York
who facilitated a workshop on AIDS awareness within the people of color
community.
Cultural Expressions Art Workshop: In Honor of Latino
Awareness Month, Las Hermanas invited the Wesleyan community to express
their culture through art.
"Understanding the Gender Culture": Las Hermanas, presented
a viedo of Dr. Pat heim speaking on the politics of gender and facilitated
a discussion with the Wesleyan Community.
SPRING 1999
Sista Love: Las Hermanas created and continue to
facilitate weekly sessions with an all-womyn's teen support
group in conjunction with the Middletown Youth Center.
